Creative Funding

Solutions for Student Participation in the Art of Writing: Young Authors and Artists Conference

We understand these are challenging times for schools, and funding opportunities may be limited. However, the value of creativity and expression through writing and art has never been more important. We are excited to invite your students to attend this year’s Art of Writing: Young Authors and Artists Conference at the Milwaukee Art Museum, and we want to offer a variety of funding solutions to make this possible, even in tight financial circumstances.

Here are several approaches participating schools have used to cover the $55 per student registration fee:

  1. School-Funded Participation
Some schools have chosen to fully cover the registration fee, ensuring that every student who wants to attend can do so without concern. This approach can be part of your school's investment in extracurricular enrichment and creative development.

  2. School-Covered Transportation
To share costs, some schools cover transportation expenses (such as buses), allowing families to pay the $55 registration fee. This makes the event more affordable for families while supporting student participation.

  3. Parent-Paid Registration
Parents may cover the full $55 registration fee, with the school offering logistical support and assistance. Families are often eager to contribute to opportunities that foster creativity, and many will see this as a valuable investment in their child’s education.

  4. Utilizing Gifted and Talented Funds
Schools with allocated budgets for gifted and talented programs can tap into these funds to send students to the conference. The creative and educational experiences offered by the conference align well with the goals of such programs.

  5. District Support Through Donations and Grants
Districts can explore external funding options by applying for grants or seeking donations from local businesses, community organizations, or philanthropic individuals. In some cases, schools have benefited from single or multiple donors who see the immense value in nurturing young writers and artists. Engaging the community in this effort can make a significant impact.

  6. Fundraising Activities
Schools or parent-teacher organizations (PTOs) can organize fundraisers such as bake sales, art auctions, or sponsored school events to raise the necessary funds. This can also build a sense of community, with students actively participating in raising money for their creative endeavors.

  7. Private Donations and Sponsorships
Some schools have found success by reaching out to individuals or organizations who have a passion for supporting the arts and education. A single donor, or a group of donors, may be willing to sponsor student participation, recognizing the long-term value of fostering creative expression in young people.

  8. Scholarship Programs
Establishing an internal scholarship fund for students in need can ensure that no one is left out due to financial constraints. Schools can allocate funds from existing budgets or seek external donations to create these opportunities.

These times may require more creative funding solutions than in the past, but by leveraging a combination of these options, we believe all students can have the opportunity to attend the conference and benefit from the unique experience it offers.

Thank you for your commitment to nurturing the creativity of your students. We look forward to seeing you and your young authors and artists at this year’s conference!
